About - Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines (abbreviated as “Ethiopian”) is Ethiopia’s national airline, with its primary hub at Bole International Airport. The airline has grown into one of Africa’s top airlines over the last sixty years, unrivaled in Africa for efficiency and operational performance, and has profited for practically all of its existence.

our history

Emperor Haile Selassie established Ethiopian Airlines with the help of TWA on December 30, 1945. It began service on April 8, 1946, with five Douglas DC-3 propeller-driven aircraft flying weekly between Addis Ababa and Cairo. In 1958, the airline began long-haul service to Frankfurt, and in January 1963, it launched its first jet route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi. It initially provided aircraft support to the Ethiopia-United States Mapping Mission in its mission to generate topographic maps of Ethiopia in the early 1960s.

Although it initially relied on American pilots and technicians, Ethiopian Airlines was managed and staffed entirely by Ethiopians by its 25th anniversary in 1971. It began transatlantic services in 1998. Ethiopia Airlines trained basic pilots and aviation maintenance technicians from African countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania, Chad, Djibouti, Madagascar, and Sudan in 2007. Employees at Kenya Airways, Air Zimbabwe, Bellview Airlines, Cape Verde Airlines, and Air Madagascar received additional training.

Our Pride

South African Airways, Lufthansa, TAAG-Angola Airlines, Gulf Air, Air One, Brussels Airlines, British Midland (BMI), Rwanda Air, and Saudi Arabian Airways all have code share agreements with Ethiopian Airlines. On October 25, 2008, Ethiopian Airlines received the prestigious 2008 “Best Airline in Africa Award” at the Akwaaba Travel Market’s African Travel Award gala in Lagos, Nigeria. Ethiopian received the prize for having a “great network and convenient connectivity in Africa.”
